Getting Started
What is the Three.fold workflow?
Three.fold is built around three columns:
- Inbox — Capture everything here. Don’t think, just add.
- Today — Promote the tasks you’ll actually do today. Limited intentionally.
- Notes — A persistent scratchpad for links, ideas, and anything temporary.
Each day, move tasks from Inbox → Today, do your work, and let the daily rollover return unfinished tasks to Inbox automatically.
How do I add a task?
- Click the Add to Inbox… field at the bottom of the Inbox column, type your task, and press Return.
- Use ⌘N to focus the Inbox add field from anywhere in the app.
- Use ⌘⇧N to add directly to Today.
- From the widget, tap + to add to Inbox without opening the app.
How do I move a task to Today?
- Drag a task from Inbox and drop it into the Today column.
- Right-click (or Control-click) a task → Move to Today.
- Select a task and press ⌘T.
Inbox
What do the vote arrows do?
The up/down arrows next to each Inbox task are votes (−3 to +3). Tasks with more votes float to the Prioritised section; tasks with fewer votes sink to Backlog. Use them to surface what really matters without manually sorting.
What are Contexts?
Contexts (like Work or Personal) are colour-coded labels you can attach to tasks. They help you filter the Inbox to focus on one area at a time. Create custom contexts in Settings → Contexts.
Quick-assign: when adding a task, type a prefix like W: Buy new keyboard to automatically assign the Work context.
How do I filter by Context?
At the top of the Inbox column, tap a context pill to filter. Tap All to return to the full list.
Today
Why can I only have certain numbers of tasks in Today?
Today is divided into tiers by design:
- High Priority — 1 slot. Your one most important task.
- Medium Priority — 2 slots. Important, but secondary.
- Quick Wins — Unlimited. Small, fast tasks.
The limit is intentional. If everything is a priority, nothing is.
What is Daily Rollover?
At the time you set in Settings → Behavior → Daily Rollover, any tasks remaining in Today are automatically moved back to Inbox. This gives you a clean Today column every morning and prevents tasks from accumulating indefinitely.
Notes
What formatting does Notes support?
Notes supports plain text with lightweight markup that the editor styles automatically:
Syntax | Result |
- item or * item or • item | Bullet list |
→ item or · item or > item | Styled bullet / blockquote |
1. item | Numbered list |
- [ ] item | Unchecked checkbox |
- [x] item | Checked checkbox |
Press Return at the end of a list item to continue the list automatically.
How do I convert notes to tasks?
- Select the text in Notes you want to convert.
- Click Selection → Task in the Notes column header.
If nothing is selected, all lines in Notes are converted to individual Inbox tasks.
What is Notes Auto-Clear?
Set Notes to automatically clear after a chosen interval (1 day, 3 days, 7 days, 14 days, 30 days, or never) in Settings → Behavior → Notes Auto-Clear. A countdown timer in the Notes footer shows when the next clear will happen. You can also clear immediately with Clear Now.
Can I collapse the Notes column?
Yes — click the › chevron in the Notes column header to fold it into a slim tab. Click the tab again to expand it. The same works for Inbox and Today.
iCloud Sync
How do I sync Three.fold between my Mac, iPhone, and iPad?
Three.fold syncs via iCloud. Make sure:
- You are signed in to the same Apple ID on all devices.
- iCloud is enabled in System Settings → Apple ID → iCloud.
- iCloud Sync is enabled in Three.fold → Settings → Data → iCloud Sync.
Changes sync automatically in the background. Tap the sync indicator in the toolbar to trigger a manual sync.
My tasks aren’t appearing on my other device. What should I do?
- Check that both devices are connected to the internet.
- Make sure iCloud is enabled and not restricted (Settings → Apple ID → iCloud → Show All).
- Force a manual sync by clicking the iCloud icon in the toolbar.
- If tasks are still missing after a few minutes, try quitting and relaunching Three.fold.
Can I use Three.fold without iCloud?
Yes. Disable iCloud Sync in Settings → Data → iCloud Sync. All data stays on your device only. You can re-enable sync at any time — your local data will be uploaded to iCloud when you do.
Widgets
How do I add the Three.fold widget?
Right-click the macOS desktop → Edit Widgets → search for “Three.fold”. Available widget sizes show your Today tasks or an Add to Inbox quick-capture button.
The widget shows outdated tasks. How do I refresh it?
The widget updates automatically when you make changes in the app. If it appears stale, open Three.fold and make any change (even a minor edit) to trigger a widget refresh.
Privacy & Data
Where is my data stored?
Your data is stored locally on your Mac in a private SwiftData database. If iCloud Sync is enabled, it is also stored in your personal, private iCloud container — accessible only to you. We have no servers and no access to your data. See the full Privacy Policy.
How do I delete all my data?
- Delete individual tasks by right-clicking → Delete.
- Clear completed tasks with the ✓ button in the toolbar → Clear.
- Clear notes with the Clear Now button in the Notes footer.
- To delete all app data entirely, delete the Three.fold app. If iCloud Sync was enabled, also delete the iCloud container at iCloud.com → Manage Storage → Three.fold.
